EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FLAVORS OF MARIJUANA

Fruity, spicy, woody, floral… With cannabis consumption, we can obtain a multitude of flavors depending on what we crave at any given moment.

Each marijuana plant grown from seed has unique flavor, aroma, and cannabinoid characteristics. The world of cannabis offers a wide range of possibilities because growing varieties with different genetics also allows for very different consumption experiences. Different flavors and aromas to try and choose the one that best meets our needs.

Until not too many years ago, marijuana was known to have only three flavors: fruity, earthy, and floral. Today, thanks to cross-breeding, there are at least 48 flavors proven by experts and consumers. Among the flavors and aromas that can be found are fruity, coffee, cheese, wood, jasmine, mint, pistachio, Tabasco, lavender, and more. Furthermore, the entire variety of flavors offered by marijuana comes from natural and organic sources.

Why are there different flavors?

The wide variety of flavors and aromas found in cannabis is the result of the combination of two organic elements found in marijuana: flavonoids and terpenes. Terpenes are aromatic substances with many antioxidant and anticancer properties (the best-known flavonoids are beta-carotene and lycopene).

Terpenes are the organic compounds that create the essential oils secreted by plant resins. These elements give each variety distinct aromatic qualities, which will also influence our bodies differently.

Sweet-tasting marijuana

If you surveyed many cannabis consumers, a good portion would likely tell you that their favorite flavor is sweet. There's a wide range of sweet flavors in marijuana, and many more have emerged over the past few years thanks to the Cookies family, which includes baked goods, desserts, and even ice cream-flavored weed.

In this type of marijuana, we can find nuances such as vanilla, honey, milk, etc., although the most common tend to be fruity and floral, but these are so widespread that they deserve a separate category. If you like these baking flavors, I recommend checking out Lava Cake, Biscotti, Girl Scout Cookies, Wedding Cake, Cereal Milk, or Ice Cream Cake seeds, among others.

The best fruity flavors of cannabis

There are all kinds of fruity tastes in yerba mate, especially citrus fruits Thanks to the terpene limonene, but when combined with linalool, myrcene, or caryophyllene, it creates combinations reminiscent of banana, pineapple, grapes, or mango, among many others. Below you can see the most notable ones:

  • Lemon: It is probably the most widespread fruity flavor in cannabis, and can be found in classic Landrace varieties and in modern hybrids such as Lemon Tree, Lemon Zkittlez, Limoncello, or Amnesia Lemon among others.

  • Grapes: This is the most popular fruity strain in recent years, as some of the most award-winning hybrids of the last decade share this flavor. Grape Ape is one of the most widely used grape-flavored genetics in the US to create new strains, as is the case with the legendary Grandaddy Purple. However, the most sought-after strains today are undoubtedly Purple Punch crosses like Slurricane or the potent and flavorful Wedding Crasher.

  • TropicalTropical fruit-flavored marijuana has always been considered exotic, as it's not as common as other fruity strains. Cinderella 99 became famous at the time for being the first pineapple-flavored marijuana strain after the legendary Maui Wowie, but now there are others like Guava Cake, Papaya, Forbidden Fruit, or Grapefruit that are reminiscent of tropical fruit and have a very intense flavor.

  • Forest fruitsThe famous Blue family of cannabis strains has achieved worldwide fame thanks to its beautiful colors and excellent berry flavor. Within this category, we must highlight the great Blueberry, and what we consider to be its best offspring, Blue Dream.

  • Multifruits: Among the cannabis varieties that mix many fruity notes, Skunk stands out, but there are other seeds that have become classics such as Critical or Somango that seem to accentuate these organoleptic properties even more.

  • Other fruity flavors of cannabis:Nowadays, you can find all kinds of fruity flavors in marijuana, from cherry flavors like Cherry Pie, to tangerine flavors like Tangie, to apple flavors like the delicious Apple Fritter.

Sweet marijuana with floral notes

Although people generally prefer fruity tones, many people prefer floral flavors among sweet varieties. It's truly one of the most widespread flavors in marijuana, as some landraces like Jamaican Lambsbread contain it. Other good floral varieties include White Rhino or Great White Shark, but there's a wide selection of these types of seeds available these days.

Cannabis varieties with a sweet caramel or candy flavor

Who doesn't love candy? Well, today we're fortunate enough to enjoy many varieties of marijuana with this flavor thanks to the many genetic combinations that have been developed in recent years. In our opinion, the best candy-flavored marijuana seeds are Bubble Gum, Zkittlez, Gushers, Runtz, and the delicious Candyland.

Chemical flavors in marijuana

Chemical flavors aren't very common in pure strains, but since the Chem family appeared on the scene, they've become increasingly common. Although it may seem like a coincidence, the term "Chem" in this type of cannabis comes from Chemdog, the breeder who created the hybrid known as Chem Dawg, and not so much from its aroma or flavor.

The entire OG Kush line, and much of the Sour family, shares chemical undertones, some more reminiscent of fuel, others reminiscent of solvent, cleaning products, metal, or even petroleum derivatives like plastic or neoprene. In our view, the best chemical-flavored marijuana strains are Chemdawg itself, OG Kush, New York Diesel, or the sticky Gorilla Glue.

Incense, the densest cannabis smoke

Incense-like flavors in marijuana were very popular during the 1990s, coinciding with the reign of Haze hybrids in the Netherlands. Interestingly, Original Haze, the mother or grandmother of all those hybrids, didn't have that cathedral-like aroma, but the vast majority of the offspring share that quality.

Among the hundreds of genetics that have an incense taste, some seeds stand out, such as Jack Herer, Amnesia CBD, Super Silver Haze, Neville's Haze, or even autoflowering seeds such as Auto Northern Lights X Auto Haze, or the colossal Haze XXL Auto.

Earthy marijuana, that particular flavor

The earthy flavor in cannabis is one of the most common, and that's no coincidence, since this pronounced taste is given by myrcene, a terpene that is usually present in all varieties to a greater or lesser extent, since it is the second most widespread after caryophyllene.

If you're looking for marijuana seeds with an earthy flavor, I recommend checking out the famous Bubba Kush, which combines this flavor with hints of coffee to create a very original smoke. Another prestigious cannabis strain with an earthy flavor is Skywalker OG, which also gives you a top-notch high. Green Crack is another very earthy strain, although its flavor incorporates citrus nuances, the aftertaste and prevailing aroma are very similar to wet earth.

Mentholated flavors in the cannabis, very smooth fresh and balsamic smoke

There are some pure strains from Asia that produce a very smooth and refreshing smoke, reminiscent of the menthol cigarettes sold by some tobacco brands. But this type of flavor became popular with the emergence of Cookies genetics, especially after the widespread popularity of the Thin Mint Cookies phenotype.

The terpene responsible for the minty flavor in marijuana is ocimene, and it's not as common as other terpenes, but that doesn't mean you can't find commercial seeds with these organoleptic properties. Animal Mints is one of the most minty cannabis strains on the planet, also offering a very potent effect and high resin production. Other minty marijuana options are Kmintz by Ripper Seeds or Biscotti Mints by Barney's Farm.

Marijuana with a woody and spicy flavor

A few years ago, it was one of the most common flavors among consumed herbs, as it became very popular with the legendary Original Haze and some of its crosses. It's worth noting that it's quite common to find Landraces with this type of flavor, especially in pure sativas, which is why many commercial seeds currently sold share this terpene profile.

The combination of caryophyllene and myrcene results in a smoke laden with nuances reminiscent of clove, thyme, rosemary, black pepper, fine woods, and many other notes that are often incense-like, or even reminiscent of leather or fur. There are a ton of cannabis seeds available right now with woody and spicy flavors, but if you're looking for a recommendation, I recommend checking out Kali Mist x Jack Herer or Hindu Kush x Northern Lights.
