This global reality is already being analyzed in Spain by a subcommittee in the Congress of Deputies, supported by all parties except the PP and Vox, and which the PSOE will now propose for our country at its next congress in October.
Thus, at its 40th Congress, the PSOE will debate a legal framework for the use of medical cannabis in Spain, through the National Health System and with a medical prescription. To this end, the various legislative frameworks established on this issue in Portugal, France, and Germany will be assessed to implement the use of medical cannabis in our country.
A measure that could benefit patients like Carola Pérez, president of the Spanish Observatory of Medicinal Cannabis. She has lived with chronic pain for 30 years, ever since she fell while skating at age 11 and broke her tailbone. "When I was 18, they removed my tailbone, and to this day I've had 13 back surgeries," says Carola, who has to lie down for at least 15 hours a day.

In his case, cannabis has substantially improved his quality of life. "Cannabis came in at a time when I was already in a very desperate situation, asking my parents for help to die, and suddenly I began to notice that my quality of life improved incredibly," he explains.
For this reason, for years, she has been working to regulate therapeutic cannabis and to give a voice to the more than 250,000 people estimated to turn to marijuana to alleviate the effects of various illnesses. According to the CIS (Spanish National Council of Medical Research), 90% of Spaniards support this medicinal use of cannabis.
Medical experts endorse its benefits: Neuroscientist Noemí Sánchez Nacher points out that cannabis "has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of chronic pain, in the management of spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis, and in the nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy treatments."
However, not everyone in politics sees it this way. For example, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, stated this Friday that "it is a disservice to Madrid's healthcare system to say that drugs are needed to replace anything." "As a personal assessment, I think drugs are a condemnation, that they take away the individual's freedom, they take away autonomy, and they are absolutely harmful," the Popular Party leader asserted.
