CBD Lubricants, or How to Make Cannabidiol Sexy
With all the recent excitement surrounding cannabidiol (CBD) and its seemingly endless purported benefits, it's only natural that CBD lube is now the new "thing" everyone, especially everyone, wants to be a part of. Apparently, there are few things CBD can't fix. Feeling anxious?
Sip a CBD latte. Need to wear uncomfortable high heels? Rub the stuff on your feet like a balm. Want to increase your pleasure during sex? Apply some CBD lube to your lady parts… Yes, you read that last part right.
Just when we thought we'd found every possible use for CBD, we discovered CBD lube is this new thing we were talking about earlier. And, surprise, surprise, it might be the best use for it yet.
Okay, this new CBD lube is a unique cannabis-infused product that promises to take your sexual pleasure to new heights. But does it really do anything regular lube can't?
First, a refresher on what CBD is. There are two main chemical components in the cannabis plant: THC and CBD. THC, short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is what gets you high. CBD does not. However, it can potentially impart feelings of relaxation and calm: While scientists are still in the early stages of CBD research, early animal and human studies have pointed to CBD's anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory properties, according to NPR.
In a recent 2019 study of 72 participants with anxiety and insomnia, four out of five participants reported lower anxiety levels and two-thirds reported better sleep after taking 25 milligrams of CBD daily for a month. Additionally, the Mayo Clinic reports that CBD may be an effective anti-seizure medication.
WhichWhat are the benefits of CBD lubricant?
There isn't much research on CBD yet, which means most of the information available about CBD lube and sexual pleasure is anecdotal. That said, many people swear by the positive effects of using it during sex.
CBD reportedly reduces inflammation, so for women who may experience pain or discomfort during intercourse, a CBD lubricant is their best friend. Not only does it help reduce pain, but it can also help relax muscles and increase blood flow.
“CBD lube can increase sensitivity for some, and most experience relaxation, creating a greater willingness to receive pleasurable touch, which in turn can lead to better, stronger orgasms,” says Tammy Nelson, PhD, a certified sexologist and author of “Getting the Sex You Want.”
“Using CBD lube can help with vaginal pain, penetration, and can decrease and even prevent irritation.” She notes that some manufacturers claim CBD lube can moisturize and regenerate skin, but says she hasn't seen any studies to confirm this.
However, this research (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4961737/) has shown that there are other attractive potential benefits associated with using herbs in your intimate activities. CBD and the other prominent element in cannabis, THC, work with your body's endocannabinoid system, which controls homeostasis and can affect everything from your mood to your appetite, your sex drive, and your body's response during sex.
CBD lubricant may also be beneficial for people who may experience pain during sex, which can be caused by a number of different factors, including vaginismus, vaginitis, polycystic ovary syndrome, or vaginal tearing from birth.
“CBD can help reduce tension in the pelvic floor, so it can reduce pain and inflammation upon penetration,” says Cyo Nystrom, CEO and co-founder of Quim. She also points to studies showing CBD is very beneficial for people experiencing PTSD due to sexual trauma.
¿There is somen risk?
The most important thing, as with almost all CBD products, is that there is still no regulation, so you need to be a savvy label reader to know exactly what you're buying. Also known as whether what you're using is actually legitimate, as CBD products vary greatly depending on the source of the CBD and the method of consumption.
Different people may also respond to different types of CBD in different ways.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that many CBD lubes are oil-based, so they're not safe to use with condoms because the oil can cause the latex to break (which, you know, defeats the purpose of a condom). And apparently, there's such a thing as "too much of a good thing." If you use too much or the CBD lube is too potent, you run the risk of a dulling feeling. Duly noted.
¿Whatand I should look for when buying a CBD lubricant?
With CBD lube companies popping up everywhere, how do you know you're buying high-quality CBD lube?
If you can, look for a full-spectrum organic CBD lube, experts say. There's a saying in cannabis, "the more, the merrier." It means that individual cannabinoids, like CBD, work best when left alone with all the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and other goodies.
According to experts, the next best option is broad-spectrum CBD lubricant, which retains most of the other plant compounds. Next on the list after broad-spectrum is CBD isolate, which would only include CBD extract.
Another point to keep in mind is that it has been proven to maintain and care for the natural pH of your sensitive skin down there.
