Does CBD help with epilepsy?
Many people are seeking alternative treatments to help manage their epilepsy. One promising option is cannabidiol, or CBD oil. Due to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system, CBD can alleviate a variety of symptoms associated with epilepsy without inducing a "stoned" feeling like THC. In fact, CBD has been so successful in relieving seizures that the first and only FDA-approved CBD-containing medication is prescribed to treat severe forms of epilepsy.
In June 2018, the FDA approved the first CBD-containing medication. This oral solution, called Epidiolex, contains 99% of pure CBD and is prescribed to treat severe forms of epilepsy, specifically Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Both begin during infancy. Because the seizures associated with these syndromes are so frequent and severe, they often result in delayed or impaired development of a child’s language and motor skills, ability to connect with others, and intellectual aptitude.
CBD's long-term treatment potential for epilepsy
In a previous 2015 study, researchers found that CBD treatment had significant and sustained effects over a two-year period. The study included 132 children and adult patients, and their seizures over a two-week period were reduced on average from 144 to 52. Participants were using Epidiolex doses of 20 to 30 mg/kg per day.
How does CBD oil stop seizures?
The endocannabinoid system works to maintain biological functions in an optimal state of functioning, from appetite and body temperature to sleep and motor control. To do this, the endocannabinoid system communicates with various bodily systems through cannabinoid receptors located throughout the central and peripheral nervous system. Endocannabinoids (which are produced by the body as part of the endocannabinoid system) bind to these receptors as needed to restore a healthy balance.
