Cannabis may be the key to achieving the UN's sustainable development goals.

Cannabis and its multiple uses may be key to achieving several of the sustainable development goals set by the UN for 2030. This is the bet of researcher Kenzi Riboulet-Zemouli, lead author of a report published in 2019 and now translated into Spanish, which explores the potential of cannabis to address the goals set by the United Nations in 2015, the so-called 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The guide Sustainable Cannabis: Public Policy Manual It is organized into chapters, each of which explores one of the Sustainable Development Goals. These include ending poverty, economic growth, health and well-being, and climate action, among others. The report links the cannabis plant and its public policies to many of the goals that make up the 15 Sustainable Development Goals (the 2030 Agenda has a total of 17).

“In an over-connected global village where the behavior of our societies disrupts nature at its most extreme (from pandemics to climate change), the 2020-2030 decade demands a renewed vision and a new way of connecting with nature. In this regard, cannabis and its policies can also be established as a fundamental pillar,” reads the report's introduction.

The report, originally published by FAAAT in March 2019, has now been published by the European Cannabis Observatory. According to the author, a novel policy approach could be useful beyond issues related to the plant and could be an important tool for supporting other objectives and changing "numerous outdated and unsustainable public policies that are neither cannabis-related nor drug-related."

The ancient cannabis plant has had countless uses since its discovery, beyond the purely recreational. Its uses include medicine, food, energy, and textiles, to name a few. Therefore, its cultivation and use can contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals and the fight against poverty established in the 2030 Agenda. This is how the European Observatory for Food Consumption and Cultivation understands it.
